Steel Rule Die (SRD) Maker Specialists to Level 1 – Job Description

Position Summary:

The Steel Rule Die (SRD) Maker position is a progressive, skill development, career position.  The position requires understanding blueprints and engineered tool drawings that correlate to a finished tool build.  A Level 1 SRD Maker will learning how to use the auto-bender equipment and the manual tools and methods necessary to build a steel rule die.  The position has personal responsibility to work & accomplish the tool build within developing efficient manners while maintaining quality standards that meet or exceed the standards set by MDC and/or its customers.  The position requires individual focus on hand to eye coordination and the ability to use and progressively improve on skills for making Steel Rule Dies.

Authority:

The position reports to the Department Production Supervisor with direction from the Department Lead.

Accountability:

Accountable to the Production Manager & Supervisor for all work performance and company policy activities.  Accountable to Direct Department, Supervisor and to Management to communicate all relevant information.

Die Making Responsibilities:

SRD Tool Makers are assessed through their skill & tool build performance under a three level scale (a tool build difficulty scale):

  • Level 1: Typically a trainee to most likely under three years of SRD build experience. Tool build instructions are simple geometric designs, (i.e.  circles, squares, rectangles, straight rule install, minor rule bends & +/-.01” tolerances, etc.)   A Level 1 die maker will be developing hand-bench tool build skills and some operational skills using Auto-bender equipment. This individual can repeatedly log-in into MDC ERP system/Openshop and manage accurate data and scan records.
  • Level 2: Multiple successful performance reviews on Level 1 requirements.  Most likely greater than 2 years SRD build experience.  This individual can build dies under repetitive assessment within +/- .05” tolerance, meets and achieves MDC shop assessment tool build scale difficulty level 2, and can operate Auto-bender equipment under no supervision. This SRD position/level can completely manage through a MDC Job/Traveler ticket under limited to no supervision requirement.  This tool maker is completing 75% of assigned tool builds within Supervisors timeline and quality requirements. Developing focus to keen attention to details. Performance includes managing thru additional SRD department requirements, machine maintenance, assigned training, tool QMS, material/supplies management, a department trouble-shooter resource, timely work schedule performance & additional introduced production roles.
  • Level 3 = continued successful performance review on Level 2 requirements. The individual can tool build under repetitive assessment tools, if tasked better than +/- .05 tolerance; meets/achieves MDC shop assessment tool build difficulty scale level 4 & higher. Can operate Autobender technology under no supervision. This SRD position/level can completely manage through a MDC Job/Traveler ticket under limited to no supervision requirement.  This tool maker is completing 85% of assigned tool builds within Supervisors timeline and quality requirements. This tool maker level is defined as the “Go To Tool Maker” for all MDC SRD tool build requirements. The best skill this tool maker can & will provide is being a tool maker trainer and share tool maker tribal build knowledge base. This position may allocate or carry more time/capacity to tool build requirements, then Level 2, because of their efficiency and quality.

All the above levels in some degree, by Supervisor & Management assessment, carry these responsibility & successful task completion:

  • Keep abreast of industry developments, production techniques and new methods of steel rule die construction.
  • Ability to complete Tool / Die construction in an efficient and quality manner.
  • Follows prescribed tool build Procedures, Work instructions, Tool build Ticket/Traveler in the production of all laser cut steel rule dies.
  • Ensure all work is performed with upmost commitment to maintaining the highest standards of quality.
  • Ensure all equipment is properly used and maintained and that the department is kept clean and orderly at all times
  • Inform Supervisor or Shift Leader of any production concerns.
  • Inform Production Supervisor or Shift Leader of any departmental problems or complaints; technical and/or personal.
  • Accept company requested Overtime schedule when provides 48 hours of advanced notice.
  • Follow company communication policy.
  • Follow all safety rules, practice and promote preventative safety.
  • Obtain additional training as required by the Production Supervisor and Management.
  • Support our ISO 9001 program.
  • Team participant and contributor to MDC Department Programs, meetings, training and Huddleboard objectives.
  • Consistently follow Company policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as apparent or assigned.

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds in order to lift and move die boards and rule.
  • Ability to stand 90% of work time to perform the duties of the Die Tool Maker.
  • Must be able to climb stairs, while possibly carrying dies or other materials from different departments.
  • Adequate vision and hand and eye coordination to interpret the directions on the job ticket and form the steel rule within specified tolerances.
  • Ability to read, interpret and conceptualize blue print information, job orders and related information.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills
  • Demonstrated Initiative.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and communicate effectively with individuals from all levels of the organization.
  • Timely, on-time, work schedule attendance.
