Position Summary:

Program and Operate one or more Wire & Sinker Electrical-Discharge Machines (EDM) to ensure metal parts are fabricated to meet print specifications. Oversee the wire room operations to manage workflow and ensure production is done in an efficient manner. Support Matched Metal Tool build processes from specifications such as noted in blueprints, sketches, models, or descriptions, and visualizes product to determine materials required, any necessary fixturing and the machines to be used to fabricate parts.

Accountability:

This position reports to the Production Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities as management may deem necessary.

 

EDM with Level 1 Tool Maker/Machinist

  • Mounts specified electrode in preset holder on spindle.
  • Positions and secures workpiece on machine table or places it in fixture.
  • Moves controls to align electrode and workpiece and to set electrode feed rate, depth limit, and electric current.
  • Independently program the EDM. Programing software knowledge Mastercam & Esprit.
  • Understands the job ticket requirements and completes each job timely and accurately.
  • Cut, shape, and trim blanks or blocks to specified lengths or shapes, using power saws, machine tools, grinders, and hand tools.
  • File, grind, shim, and adjust different parts for proper fit.
  • Lift, position, and secure machined parts on surface plates or worktables, using hoists, vises, v-blocks, or angle plates.
  • Measure, mark, and scribe metal or plastic stock to lay out machining, using instruments such protractors, micrometers, scribes, and rulers.
  • Smooth and polish flat and contoured surfaces of parts or tools, using scrapers, abrasive stones, files, emery cloths, or power grinders.
  • Verify dimensions, alignments, and clearances of finished parts for conformance to specifications, using measuring instruments such as calipers, gauge blocks, micrometers, and dial indicators.
  • Performs Operator Part Inspection & First Article Approval processes.
  • EDM machine & general shop maintenance.
  • Training on the work lift and material moving equipment.
  • Performs all duties apparent and as assigned.
  • Material management and inventory assistance as directed.
  • Cleans work area.
  • Follow all safety rules, practice and promote preventative safety.
  • Follow company policies and procedures.

 

Level 2 (Includes all or most of level one and the following)

  • Meets with engineers to discuss potential machine problems.
  • Conduct test runs with completed tools or dies to ensure that parts meet specifications; adjust, as necessary.
  • Fit and assemble parts to make, repair, or modify dies, jigs, gauges, and tools, using machine tools and hand tools.
  • Inspect finished dies for smoothness, contour conformity, and defects.
  • Set up and operate conventional or computer numerically controlled machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, and grinders to cut, bore, grind, or otherwise shape parts to prescribed dimensions and finishes.
  • Study blueprints, sketches, models, or specifications to plan sequences of operations for fabricating tools, dies, or assemblies.
  • Visualize and compute dimensions, sizes, shapes, and tolerances of assemblies, based on specifications.
  • Design jigs, fixtures, and templates for use as work aids in the fabrication of parts or products.

 

Level 3 (Includes all or most of level one, two and the following)

  • Examines standard or previously used dies, tools, and jigs and fixtures, and has skill to recommend design modifications regarding construction and function of part.
  • Assist in the decision-making process of future machine and tooling purchases.
  • Assist design in selecting materials to be used from a range of metals and alloys, based on properties such as hardness and heat tolerance.
  • Assists designer/engineers to Develop and design new tools and dies.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Requires education equivalent to a 2-year Technical Degree.
  • Requires 3+ years of EDM Program Operator machinist experience.
  • EDM Software Mastercam & Esprit.
  • Tool Maker / Machinist Skills – TBD assessed & knowledge tested.
  • Metal Stamping & Progressive Die functionality knowledge is a benefit.
  • Requires mathematical skills that require the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, and perform geometric algebraic and trigonometry calculations.
  • Must perform metric conversions.
  • Requires good English oral and written communication skills in order to interact with employees.
  • Must be able to read and understand blueprints and part specifications.
  • Workstation Computer/PC experience or demonstrated knowledge.

  • While performing the duties and responsibilities of this position, the employee is required to walk, use foot/feet to operate machine, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, reach above shoulders and move from place to place.
  • Ability to stand or sit and frequently use hands to finger, handle, or touch. The workstation requirements require the ability to stand 90% of the work time.
  • Specific vision requirements for this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to lift 75 pounds in order to move and manage tooling equipment & supplies.

The employee works in a manufacturing/factory environment and is occasionally exposed to wet, humid conditions, production fluids and/chemicals, vibrations and mechanical moving machines and parts. The work environment has exposure to fumes or airborne particles and work near moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is loud.
